Duranes Elementary School Success Story
Duranes Elementary School Case Study
"...Garcia [Duranes Elementary School Principal] has reported a
dramatic drop in referrals to the principal's office — from 462 two
years ago to 162 last year..."
Albuquerque Journal - February 26, 2008
How quickly can you identify trends in behavior? Do you have to dig through paperwork to spot trends or can you immediately
identify successes?
With the click of a button, Duranes Elementary uses the SM&RT system to create charts that quickly show these trends. With the SM&RT system, your school can do this.
The Dilemma
Three years ago, Duranes Elementary School found themselves overwhelmed with paperwork used for discipline referrals. Every semester, teachers were burdened with combing through mounds of paperwork to compile reports. With talented faculty and staff spending so much time sifting through paperwork, Duranes Elementary officials asked themselves some important questions: "How can we better manage the discipline process at our school? And how do we organize discipline information into useful reports that help us understand behavioral trends that we can address quickly?"
Duranes Elementary identified their old discipline process as an area where technology could help streamline the discipline process and eliminate paper forms that were filled out by hand with copies sent to administrators, parents, and teachers. Often times, parents, teachers, or staff lost copies of discipline referrals requiring that another paper form be completed. This lead to breakdowns in communication that wasted time and frustrated both parents and teachers.
The Decision
1) Faculty and staff had access to computers and were comfortable using web-based technology: With computers readily accessible to faculty and staff and their familiarity with web-based applications, Duranes felt confident that the SM&RT web application would be well received and that faculty and staff would be able to quickly begin using the tool minimizing any delays associated with using unfamiliar technology.
2) Simplified reporting, elimination of lost reports, and an easy-to-use web-interface: The SM&RT system offered Duranes the ability to collect discipline information in a central location and allow administrators to view data in real-time. Lost referral forms became a thing of the past with the ability to print unlimited copies for parents and administrators. Duranes was excited about using a tool that reported disciplinary statistics school-wide with the ability to drill down to the classroom and student level for more detail if necessary. Teachers no longer filled out copies by hand and they could even track parent signatures on discipline referrals sent home to parents.
The Deployment
Duranes has been using the SM&RT system to manage discipline for 3 years. During the initial deployment, Trequel provided on-site training to faculty and staff that would be using and maintaining the system. Trequel also installed the system on the Duranes network.
Not only did Duranes want to ensure that its deployment was successful for faculty and staff, but it also wanted to make it as easy to administer as possible. With an intuitive interface and in-depth training and support, Duranes was using the SM&RT system with little difficulty.
How it Works
The SM&RT system works with your school's existing intranet, so no special hardware or software is required. The SM&RT system allows any computer on the intranet to access the program at any time. It also works with your existing discipline policy. Your school has the ability to input the different rules emphasized at your school as well as the consequences that go with breaking those rules. The SM&RT system is dynamic software that will grow and change with your school.
